Orthopedic Footwear

Poor fitting shoes can cause corns, callouses, blisters, bunions and ingrown toenails and aggravate foot problems associated with various foot conditions including plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, arthritis and diabetes. Sound Orthotics carries a wide array of regular and off-the-shelf stock orthopedic shoes and sandals to keep you comfortable and active.

Stock orthopaedic footwear is the most frequently used footwear solution for pedorthic patients. While many features of stock orthopaedic footwear can be found in everyday shoes, there are two features that typically distinguish footwear as orthopaedic:

  1. Extra depth in the shoe.
  2. The shoe must be manufactured in at least three widths, with the tread surface widening incrementally when the upper widens.

Stock orthopaedic footwear is mass-produced, as opposed to custom-made for an individual patient. Even if stock orthopaedic footwear is modified and a custom-made orthotic is inserted, the shoe itself is not classified as custom-made. Insurers are advised to pay special attention to this distinction in reviewing claims.
